17 February 2010. Fog at dawn, muting all the corners... Yellow pool lights, shadowed swimmers' bodies...

A Russian song, "Down the Volga...," as on the ancient Monitor recordings, voices of Sergei Lemeshev, Ivan Skobtsov and Artur Eisen, "All the babushkas would weep..." And Lyudmila Zykina, available only on Soviet-era Melodia-- her squarish face, close-fitting white knit dress, the wide cheekbones, and decisively feminine pompadour...
